Roger W. Thornton
Superintendent of Schools
Roger W. Thornton became High School District 211’s fifth
superintendent of schools in July 2004. He came to District
211 from Indianapolis, Ind., where he was executive director
of the Indiana Association of Public School Superintendents
since 1998. Prior to that, Dr. Thornton served three stints
as superintendent in Indiana: Kokomo (1993-1998); Syracuse
(1987-1993); and Churubusco (1978-1986). Dr. Thornton was
principal and assistant superintendent from 1975-1978 in
Rochester, Ind. He began his career as a fifth grade
teacher in Lakeville, Ind., in 1967, before being named
counselor and assistant principal in South Bend, Ind., in
1970. He also has served as an adjunct instructor at
Indiana University, Ball State University, and Indiana
University-Purdue University (Fort Wayne). Born and raised
in Indiana, Dr. Thornton earned his bachelor’s degree in
Biblical Literature and History from Bethel College (Ind.)
in 1967, his master’s degree in Guidance and Counseling from
St. Francis College (Ind.) in 1969, and his doctorate in
School Administration from Indiana University in 1976. He
has served as president, president-elect, vice president,
and legislative committee chair of the Indiana Association
of Public School Superintendents. He also is a recipient of
that organization’s “Outstanding Educator Award,” as well as
receiving Indiana University School of Education’s
“Outstanding Leadership Award.” In April 2004,
Dr. Thornton received the prestigious “Sagamore of the
Wabash Award,” the highest honor bestowed by the Governor of
Indiana, and in May 2004, he was presented the “Bellringer
Award” from the Indiana State Superintendent and the
“Lifetime Membership Award” from the Indiana PTA.
