FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE The public is invited to attend open houses for Township High School District 211’s three student-built homes on Sunday, May 18, 2008. Students from William Fremd and Palatine High Schools worked on a house located in Lake Zurich, students from James B. Conant and Schaumburg High Schools constructed a house in Palatine, and students from Hoffman Estates High School worked on a house in Elgin. The District’s Building Trades Program is among the largest in Illinois. For over 30 years, District 211 students have experienced all phases of the building process — from designing and constructing to decorating and landscaping. “The Building Construction Program provides opportunities for lessons learned in academic classrooms to be applied to practical situations,” says Otis Price, director of career development. “The program allows application of knowledge and skills.” Open houses will be held from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. at the following locations: 46 E. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Schaumburg High School schedules spring orchestra concert Schaumburg, Ill. – The Schaumburg High School Concert Orchestra and Symphony Orchestra are scheduled to present their annual spring concert on Thursday, May 22, 2008, performing individually and together. Highlights of the performance include Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite and the Pirates of the Caribbean, as well as senior recognition following the concert. The program will be held in the school’s Weimer Auditorium (1100 West Schaumburg Road in Schaumburg), beginning at 7:30 p.m. The program will feature performances by the Schaumburg High School Drumline and Front Ensemble, SaxonSTOMP, the Wind Symphony Percussion sextet, the Symphonic Mallet Quintet, the Concert Band quartets, and the Cadet Band Percussion Choir. There also will be several students performing solos. “These percussion concerts are always very high energy and fun,” said Kevin Miller, Schaumburg High School band director. “The audiences are always very lively. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE New principal named at Fremd High School Palatine, Ill. — At its April 10, 2008 meeting, the Board of Education approved the appointment of Lisa Small as principal at William Fremd High School, effective July 1, 2008. Dr. Small, currently High School District 211’s director of instructional improvement, will follow Principal Marina Scott, who leaves District 211 after 26 years to pursue a position in another school district. Dr. Small joined District 211 in 1992 as a science and mathematics teacher at Hoffman Estates High School, also serving as a girls’ and boys’ volleyball coach. She was promoted to 10-month assistant principal at the school in 2000. In 2002, she was named 12-month assistant principal at Fremd High School, a position she held until moving to the Administration Center as director of instructional improvement in 2004. She began her education career as a biology teacher at Adlai Stevenson High School (Prairie View, Ill.). “I am excited about Lisa Small taking over the principalship at Fremd High School,” commented Superintendent Roger Thornton. “Given the District’s requirements and expectations for higher student achievement, Dr. Small’s experience and administrative leadership will be extremely beneficial. This, along with her enthusiasm for education, will help her in making a smooth transition into the principalship.” Dr. Small received her bachelor’s degree in biology education from Ohio State University in 1991, her master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from Northern Illinois University in 1997, a certificate of advanced studies in educational leadership administration and supervision from National-Louis University in 2000, and her doctorate in curriculum and instruction from Loyola University in 2005. - 30 -
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE District 211 to host second-annual “The Future Begins Today” parent night Palatine, Ill. – Township High School District 211 will host “The Future Begins Today,” an open house event for parents/guardians of individuals with a wide range of developmental disabilities on May 1, 2008. The parent night will be held from 6:30 until 9:30 p.m. at Palatine High School (1111 N. Rohlwing Road in Palatine). It is sponsored by High School District 211 in conjunction with Clearbrook, Community Alternatives Unlimited (CAU), and the Department of Rehabilitation Services (DRS). A variety of topics will be presented during three informational sessions. In addition, adult agency providers will be available throughout the evening to provide information on specific programs, resources, and services. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Schaumburg High School hosts joint districts Choral Festival Schaumburg, Ill. – Schaumburg High School will host choirs from School District 54’s Robert Frost and Jane Addams Junior High Schools, performing individually and with the high school’s choral groups, on Wednesday, April 2, 2008, beginning at 7:30 p.m. in the school’s gymnasium (1100 W. Schaumburg Road in Schaumburg). The festival will conclude with a group performance, including all 275 students from both the high school and junior high schools. The festival format allows parents and students from the junior high school to see and hear what musical opportunities are available at the high school level. “It is always a lot of fun to hear the groups sing the combined selection,” says Tim McGlynn, Schaumburg High School choir director. “Two hundred and seventy-five singers are able to make a lot of sound.” Frost Junior High School’s 7th and 8th grade chorus is under the direction of Meghan Losch; Addams Junior High School’s 7th and 8th grade chorus is under the leadership of Denise Kinsey; and all choirs will be accompanied by Bev Tipps. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Schaumburg High School to Host New Trombone Choir Schaumburg, Ill. – Schaumburg High School will host the newly formed Chicago Trombone Authority, a 12-member trombone choir made up of some of the best trombonists in the Chicago area. The CTA will perform on Tuesday, April 22, 2008, in Schaumburg High School's Weimer Auditorium (1100 W. Schaumburg Road in Schaumburg), beginning at 7:30 p.m. “The music played by the CTA is rich and imaginative,” commented Schaumburg High School Music Teacher Greg Tipps. “Their range of sound and styles is incredibly diverse.” The band, started just this past semester, is the special project of student-teacher Kyle Cauthorn. Led by Tom Kordus, their style of music will range from pop to classical, many of the arrangements written by members of the group. The public is welcome to attend, and tickets are $2.00. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Schaumburg High School Announces Jazz ‘N Joe Coffeehouse Schaumburg, Ill. – The Schaumburg High School music department will present its 6th-annual jazz coffeehouse on Thursday, March 13 in the school’s cafeteria (1100 W. Schaumburg Road in Schaumburg), beginning at 7:30 p.m. Featured will be recording artist, trumpeter Danny Barber, who toured with the Tommy Dorsey Band and Maynard Ferguson. Mr. Barber has performed with Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, and STYX. The SHS Jazz Ensemble, Lab Band, Combo, and Choraliers will perform. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE High School District 211 to host special needs agency Township High School District 211 will host Community Alternatives Unlimited (CAU), the first case management agency in Illinois to provide independent case management services to individuals with a wide range of developmental disabilities, including developmental disabilities, mental health needs, hearing, visual and physical impairments. In conjunction with CAU, the State of Illinois has created Prioritization of Urgency of Need for Services (PUNS), a database used to record the numbers and needs of persons with developmental disabilities within Illinois to help plan for adequate funding and services. District 211 is inviting all families with disabled children 14 and older to register them with CAU. Registration must take place during a face-to-face interview that will last approximately 45 minutes. Interested individuals may participate in this opportunity either at Hoffman Estates High School (1100 W. Higgins in Hoffman Estates) on Thursday, March 20, 2008, from 6:00 until 10:00 p.m., or at Palatine High School (1111 N. The State Scholar program recognizes Illinois high school students for outstanding academic achievement. Students ranking in the top 10 percent of the state’s graduating high school seniors have been named State Scholars. Selection is based on ACT and/or SAT I test score results and/or students’ individual class rank at the end of the junior year of high school. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Schaumburg High School students to perform at IMEA Music Festival Schaumburg, Ill. -- The Schaumburg High School Music Department will be sending four students to the Illinois Music Educators Association’s (IMEA) All-State Music Festival on January 31 through February 2, 2008. Senior alto saxophonist Eamonn Prizy, senior percussionist Alex Miller, senior vocalist Dan Shaw, and junior violinist Michelle Gibbs were selected to perform with some of the best high school musicians in the state of Illinois. Students began the audition process in October. They were selected first to perform in the IMEA District 7 Music Festival. From there, students are chosen from each geographic district in the state to form the All-State Band, Orchestra, and Choir. The All-State groups will rehearse together for three days in Peoria prior to the performance/concert on Saturday, February 2. - 30 -
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Schaumburg High School Band to perform in Florida for the holidays Schaumburg, Ill. – The Schaumburg High School Band will perform at DisneyWorld in Orlando, Fla., followed by a performance at the Outback Bowl in Tampa later in December. The band begins its tour on December 26, taking five buses to Orlando. While in Orlando, the band will perform in Disney’s Magic Kingdom on December 28 as part of the “SpectroMagic Parade.” On December 29, the band will leave for Tampa to be part of the Outback Bowl festivities, which culminate in the half-time show on New Year’s Day. The game between the University of Wisconsin and the University of Tennessee, as well as the half-time performance, will be telecast nationally on ESPN. In addition to its bowl game half-time show, the Wind Symphony, Jazz Ensemble, and Drumline will compete with 14 other participating high school bands. All of the high school bands, as well as both participating college bands, will perform on December 31 in the Outback Bowl parade in Tampa. The band, which includes 25 members, has been preparing for this trip all year. Fundraisers, such as cookie dough sales, candy sales, restaurant promotions, and plant sales were held to subsidize the costs for the week-long trip. Following the performances, the band is scheduled to return home on January 2. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Conant High School NHS members volunteer for Woodfield Area Children’s Organization Hoffman Estates, Ill. – Conant High School National Honor Society (NHS) students will be taking underprivileged children holiday shopping on Saturday, December 8. The Woodfield Area Children’s Organization is sponsoring the event, which begins at 7:00 a.m. at the Elk Grove Wal-Mart store. “Our students are very excited to help children and their families within our community have a memorable holiday season,” commented NHS Sponsor Jodie Friedman. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Schaumburg High School schedules holiday concerts Schaumburg, Ill. – The Schaumburg High School Music Department will perform three separate Holiday concerts during the month of December. On December 17, the Concert Orchestra, Choraliers, Concert Choir, and Girls Chorus I & II will perform. December 18 will feature a performance by the Symphony Orchestra, Wind Symphony, Red Eye Brass, and the Woodwind Choir. On December 19, the Symphonic Band, Concert Band, and Cadet Band will perform. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Schaumburg High School Choir to perform with Elgin Symphony Orchestra Schaumburg, Ill. – Twenty-eight members of the Schaumburg High School Concert Choir will perform at the Elgin Symphony Orchestra’s Holiday Showcase. Selection for this honor is made through stringent auditions reflecting the highest of standards by the school district, the directors, and the students. Selected students will participate in the Illinois Music Educators Association’s District 7 Festival at Crystal Lake Central High School on November 17.
