Brian Curtin is the 2013 Illinois Teacher of the Year. In his 10th year as an educator, Brian teaches English at Schaumburg High School in Township High School District 211. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Speech and Spanish from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, and a bachelor’s degree in English Education from Illinois State University. He earned his master’s degree in English Education from the University of Illinois at Chicago, and was recently recognized as a National Board Certified Teacher. In the classroom, Brian uses creativity and boundless energy to motivate his students through authentic learning experiences and student- centered activities.
Outside of the classroom, Brian is the Teaching Chair of Schaumburg High School’s Saxon Pride Team. Utilizing the PBIS model, he has produced multiple commercials that feature students working to affect school culture and motivate positive behavior throughout the Schaumburg community. He also is an assistant varsity football coach and a lacrosse coach for the Saxons.
Brian is a die-hard Chicago Bears and Fighting Illini fan. He enjoys traveling abroad, having journeyed extensively throughout Europe and North and South America. Brian also is an author of poetry and short stories with a unique focus on relationships and the human condition. He lives in Chicago with his wife, Ashley, who is a counselor at William Fremd High School in District 211.
