Debra Strauss
Board of Education Secretary
Debra Strauss was elected to the Board of Education in April 1999 and re-elected in 2003 and 2007. She was elected Board secretary in April 2009, having previously served in that capacity from 2001-2003. She served as Board president from 2003-2007.She has been recognized by the Illinois Association of School Boards as a “Master School Board Member.” Mrs. Strauss served as chair of the District 15 Educational Foundation from 2002-2004. She has been active as a community volunteer since 1988. From 1993-1997, she was the administrative assistant to the dean of National College of Education at National-Louis University. She graduated from Michigan State University with a bachelor’s degree in child development and education. Mrs. Strauss served as the Illinois PTA leadership development chair from 1997-1999 and the legislation chair from 1999-2003. In 1998, the Northwest Suburban Council PTA/PTSA awarded her an Illinois PTA honorary lifetime membership award. She served as Plum Grove Junior High School PTSA president from 1994-1996 and was Northwest Suburban Council PTA president from 1996-1998. In 1992 and again in 2005, she was recognized by the Illinois State Board of Education with a “Those Who Excel” award. In 2007, Mrs. Strauss was elected president-elect for Illinois PTA, and has been serving as president since July 1 2009, and will complete her term on July 1 2011. Mrs. Strauss served as vice chair of Education Research Development/Legislative (Ed-Red) during the 2005-2006 school year, and served as chair from 2006-2008.
